What is the difference between a retaining wall and a decorative wall?

A retaining wall holds back soil, so it has to be engineered for the pressure behind it, with a real footing, reinforcement and drainage. A decorative wall, like a seat wall or an interior accent wall, carries little or no load and is mostly about the finish. We build both, and on our retaining walls you get the structure and the designer face in one wall.

How tall can a retaining wall be before engineering matters?

The taller the wall and the heavier the load behind it, the more the design matters. Short garden walls are straightforward, but taller walls, or walls holding back a driveway or slope, need proper footing, reinforcement and drainage designed for the site. We assess all of that during the free site visit and tell you honestly what your wall needs before anything is built.

Can you put a concrete finish over an existing interior wall?

Often yes. Microcement bonds over sound drywall, block and other solid surfaces, so an accent or feature wall usually does not require demolition. We prep the surface, build up the coating in thin layers and seal it. The result looks like a solid concrete wall without the thickness or the tear out.

How much maintenance does a decorative concrete wall need?

Very little. Exterior walls get sealed against weather, so an occasional rinse and a reseal every few years keeps the finish looking new through Shenandoah Valley freeze thaw cycles. Interior microcement just needs normal cleaning with a mild cleaner. We walk you through the simple care steps at handoff.

Should I build my wall and patio at the same time?

If you are planning both, yes. Building the wall and patio as one project means one round of excavation, matched colors and finishes, and grading and drainage designed for the whole space instead of pieced together later.
